I saw this some time back but still can't get it out of my head. It came from Applebee's.

'adult spouse'.

I should add to this that the alcohol consumption laws remain the same, so you can't get your 'minor bride' drunk at least. Which isn't much to be thankful for.

@InUnfunky Yes. I've checked aorund on this and it appears that Applebee's refused to comment and so it appears legitimate. Although some reports claim it is specific to certain states. Not that that makes it much better.

@Patfromtwitter I think it was in Wisconsin. But it could've been Ohio. Not Utah though.

@IrisDallen I saw it after one of the states removed the legal age of marriage from 13 (which, upsetting;ly, it HAD been at), to any age you wanted. For girls. Obviously.

@Florence Yeah. You could say I have a love/hate relationship with my country.

@IrisDallen I'm the same. I'm just not a 'my country right or wrong' type of a gal.

@Florence As I Understand It …xMany Foreigners Entering The Country Have Cultures That Permit Child Brides At Ages Much Younger Than Americans Are Used To Seeing. How This Will Play Out In The Future..I Cannot Imagine.

@Nordicfae It really has little to do with that. The very Red states have always allowed child marriage, so long as they have parnetal consent. In fact, in this particular case, the pre-existing age of consent was 13, the GOP simply voted to remove the age thing at all.

@Nordicfae PS Sorry! I didn't mean my reply there to sound dismissive of your toot. It's just an issue I've followed for 40 odd years and I get so frustrated when American folk talk about how awful child marriage is in other countries (which is certainly is) but refuse to acknowlege we've ALWAYS had this problem in certain states.

@Florence @Nordicfae i found this interesting map of EXCEPTIONS to the prohibition on underage drinking. family/spouse, and at home. i was surprised at the number of states with exceptions.

@silent_dystopia @Nordicfae Wow, thank you for finding this. It's really so rebarbative.

@Florence @Nordicfae i've got like three other really important tasks to be doing right now. brain has latched onto this avenue of inquiry as far more interesting and compels me. :)

i'm going to stop now, because I'm icked out at stuff I stumbled across while looking for minimum ages.

In 1880, 37 states set the age of consent at 10 years, 10 states set an age of consent at 12 years, and Delaware had an age of consent of 7 years. What the fuck, Delaware? In 1871 they LOWERED it from 10.

@silent_dystopia @Nordicfae Thank you for all the information and, yes, it really is an icky thing to delve into. It makes you start thinking too much about horrific things. xx

@Florence @Nordicfae like, what happened in 1871 that resulted in the NEED to lower the age of consent? that's just fucking with my head right now.

.... OH. Apparently, this law wasn't about marriage, it was about when to apply the death penalty for rape. The law said that if you rape a female under the age of seven you apply the death penalty.

this change would subject fewer people to the death penalty. 10 years for >7.

...ok, that's still fucked up, i'm done. for reals this time. :)

@silent_dystopia @Florence @Nordicfae This is very very disgusting!! What's wrong with these people that pass laws like this?! Seems like this sort of thing is getting worse. Are these states run by pedophiles?

@Resister_Grandma @silent_dystopia @Nordicfae If only that were true though. Some of these law makers are female.

@Nordicfae Thank you. It's so easy to type something that doesn't sound nice once you read it back. Entirely unintentionally.

@Florence i do believe this is a premature assumption to make.

f'rinstance, in Texas family code, a minor is defined as a person under 18. HOWEVER, in Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code title 4 chapter 106, Sec. 106.01. DEFINITION. In this code, "minor" means a person under 21 years of age.

106.05 & .06 have exceptions for (1) the minor's adult parent, guardian, or spouse, [...] and is visibly present when the minor possesses or consumes the alcoholic beverage;

1/

@silent_dystopia That's really interesting. Thank you. In this case I talking specifically about Wisconsin laws, and the statement about the alcohol consumption laws came from their AG. But I did not know that about Texas. How awful. Thank you for letting me know.

@silent_dystopia To add to that, the AG actually clarified it. A jounrnalist asked this question specifically, and it was clarified. But, then again, there may be some exception that they didn't mention. But it came up as a specific question. I shall now endeavor to find out.

@Florence since it is possible and legal for an 18-year old to marry a 21-year old, we cannot make a definite inference that this is a child bride situation.

possibility is there, yeah. i mean, in family law that minor thing is defined as under 18 and NOT MARRIED, which I thought was kind of weird. I didn't delve too far down that path. i don't want to know that badly, that's just icky.

point being, we can't assume that this is the explicit implication.:)

end/

@silent_dystopia Sorry, yes, just replied to you again. The AG was asked this specific question and the answer clarified it meant ANYONE under the legal drinking age, whether accompanied by an adult, adult-spouse, or not. But it's possible they were prevaricating, but it was very specifically asked.
