@InUnfunky Yes. I've checked aorund on this and it appears that Applebee's refused to comment and so it appears legitimate. Although some reports claim it is specific to certain states. Not that that makes it much better.

@Nordicfae It really has little to do with that. The very Red states have always allowed child marriage, so long as they have parnetal consent. In fact, in this particular case, the pre-existing age of consent was 13, the GOP simply voted to remove the age thing at all.

In 1880, 37 states set the age of consent at 10 years, 10 states set an age of consent at 12 years, and Delaware had an age of consent of 7 years. What the fuck, Delaware? In 1871 they LOWERED it from 10.

.... OH. Apparently, this law wasn't about marriage, it was about when to apply the death penalty for rape. The law said that if you rape a female under the age of seven you apply the death penalty.

this change would subject fewer people to the death penalty. 10 years for >7.

@silent_dystopia That's really interesting. Thank you. In this case I talking specifically about Wisconsin laws, and the statement about the alcohol consumption laws came from their AG. But I did not know that about Texas. How awful. Thank you for letting me know.

@silent_dystopia To add to that, the AG actually clarified it. A jounrnalist asked this question specifically, and it was clarified. But, then again, there may be some exception that they didn't mention. But it came up as a specific question. I shall now endeavor to find out.

@Florence since it is possible and legal for an 18-year old to marry a 21-year old, we cannot make a definite inference that this is a child bride situation.

possibility is there, yeah. i mean, in family law that minor thing is defined as under 18 and NOT MARRIED, which I thought was kind of weird. I didn't delve too far down that path. i don't want to know that badly, that's just icky.

@silent_dystopia Sorry, yes, just replied to you again. The AG was asked this specific question and the answer clarified it meant ANYONE under the legal drinking age, whether accompanied by an adult, adult-spouse, or not. But it's possible they were prevaricating, but it was very specifically asked.
