Are you in favour of homeowner associations?

Absolutely not!
@CriticalCupcake No. There’s one a few blocks from here and every house looks exactly the same while stacked up against another. So close one neighbor could hand a roll of toilet paper over to another neighbor from the bathroom window.
Besides, the X-files had a perfect episode about HOA neighborhoods and what can happen when a homeowner doesn’t fall into line.
@CriticalCupcake Getting soaked in hydrofluoric acid, chucked on a decommissioned carnival ride and yeeted, sans ceremony, into the nearest star?
Yes, I am.
@CriticalCupcake
I like them *if* they are not heavy-handed. I live in a neighborhood with one, and I think they can be effective in keeping the neigborhood in good condition and thereby improving my home's value -- but I do not want one that is too heavy handed. People generally hate them, I'm probably a minority here. 🤷 But I've seen too many neighborhoods without them where things don't go too well sometimes.
@CriticalCupcake
I do think that too many people buy houses where they are literally unaware that an HOA exists, and then they get in some kind of pissing contest with the HOA over a fence or something, and that's just really not helpful for anyone. Or they expect to run a daycare out of their home or rent it as an Air B&B when those things are not allowed.
And they get angry.
People need to understand what they're getting into before they buy any home, and that doesn't happen often enough!
@CriticalCupcake
Like, for instance... if you buy a home that's in a designated Historical Preservation zone. There's a lot you can't do in that situation.
I think there are pros and cons, and the important thing is understanding very clearly what you're getting into whenever you buy real estate.
@CriticalCupcake
And of course, Don't Be A Dick. Too many HOAs are run by power-hungry bored people who like to be dicks.
@CriticalCupcake
No!!!
