I'm really not kidding at this point that Texas seceding would benefit the country. Abbott has declared quiet war on other states. Getting rid of Elon in the deal would be a bonus.

To Avoid New York Rules, Hundreds of Migrants Dropped Off in New Jersey nytimes.com/2024/01/01/nyregio

@Cosmichomicide
Huh.

I might regret saying this. And I definitely do not like Abbott at all, some of the things he does are so hateful. But what the heck, here goes.

It really sounds like Texas has a problem with migrants and nobody wants to help them.

Maybe we could focus on helping both the migrants themselves and also helping Texas deal with the influx?

@janallmac

Texas has a self created problem exacerbated by Republicans voting down both asylum funding, border funding, and immigration reform.

They have literally voted against what you suggest.

@janallmac

Also, 350 people isn't an invasion, it average attendance at a HS soccer match. They are just throwing people on buses and sending them random places for media attention and money.

@Cosmichomicide I actually was blocked from reading the article you posted, so I didn't see the numbers. I'm sure the amount of migrants Texas receives is larger than that overall.

For reference, this is the article I read, and it seems this has been happening for at least two years: msn.com/en-gb/news/us/nj-mayor

@janallmac

Can states with a homeless problem put them on buses and send them to Alabama?

Can states put non-residents who are released from prison on buses to Iowa?

Can states send their mentally ill to Texas by freight car?

Can states with too many foster children send them to states that need child labor?

Follow

@janallmac

How long before we see a Christian "opportunity" program in one of our new child labor states that offers to take in foster children from across the country and teach them a valuable meat packing or heavy construction trade while online schooling them so they don't miss work?

This isn't a "poor overwhelmed Texas" problem. This is Texas throwing it's binkie out of the pram because it's not about solving problems or governing anymore.

@Cosmichomicide
So clearly secession is the only option left?

Maybe I should clarify.

Here's the thing: Saying "look at this horrible state, this state should secede!" is not exactly helpful, and doesn't solve any problems at all, unless you are actually Russian or Chinese, or someone who doesn't care at all about helping migrants, but instead sees this as an opportunity to hurt the US in general.

I see it very often online and I don't like it. It seems unhelpful and fishy.

@janallmac

Ah, but it is Texas who is putting themselves above the union.

"We're gonna be rich!" says the Texas Nationalist Movement. Yeah, they only have a few hundred thousand followers, but they have actively positioned office holders.

I'm just saying, when they bring it up again (and they will), let them go before they continue to drag the rest of the states back to slavery and chattel with them.

Call their bluff and hope it isn't one. 🤷

@Cosmichomicide
No. Cannot agree there. Encouraging states to secede? That is actually every bit as bad as people who propose civil war.

I don't care what your political persuasion is!

Secession or encouraging secession doesn't help a single person, and whether you're GOP or D or whatever your beliefs, the only people taking secession seriously are extremists who hate the US.

@Cosmichomicide

Sorry you disagree with me but there are better solutions to the country's problems than secession, whoever you voted for. I'm still a little suspicious of anyone who brings secession up seriously or who seems to enjoy trying to get states to hate each other.

Anyway, I think I'm going to let it drop for now.

@janallmac

I never said encourage. I simply said that states that do not want to behave like members of a union and who want to secede should be allowed to do so. They should not be allowed to intentionally cause problems for others.

Texas is the crack house in the neighborhood. Or the bully in the bathroom.

But they aren't behaving like Americans.

Also, just a thought - I literally never said what you are saying I said, ostensibly your reason for no longer reading and disengaging.

@Cosmichomicide
That group that you posted the link to seems like an extremist group. I'm aware Texas has extremist groups. I hope and believe they don't represent the majority of Texans, but you're taking them seriously and encouraging others to do so as well.

Did you not say you believe the US would benefit without Texas? I'm pretty sure you did. I assumed you meant it.

@Cosmichomicide And I am disengaging, mostly because I have to work,

@janallmac

"Assume" does much work in your post. It's not a word I tend to use about online engagements, but YMMV. 🤷

This was also an entire thread about what Texas was doing to damage other states but without one single statement about what positives Texas is bringing, sitting there suing other states, putting up razor wire, overriding federal law.

Just list one positive that Texas is bringing to the table besides fossil fuels and cryptocoin.
