"...people with histories of domestic violence have managed to trick telecommunications companies into providing real-time location data by simply impersonating US officials over the phone..."
For those who may be in danger of such things, you may want to consider a location mocking app. Although, TBH I'm not sure if that would defeat E911 which the carriers use.
@0x56 But this is a real problem anyway. What do you do when your abuser IS the 911? Police or Sherriff's deputy? And so are all their friends? Always been an issue.
@Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine - I have no answers... I'm sorry. 😢
@0x56 Right? The flaw in the system is always human. How would the person in the article disclosing location know it wasn't an authorized person. None of this is a problem with the technology.
@Klaatu_Veratta_Nectarine - a very good point... I know my location mocking app can easily be switched off, but I'm not sure if I'd remember to do so in an actual emergency.
@0x56 I am fascinated. But if you are a domestic abuse survivor your phone is your lifeline. If you somehow alter it how are they going to find you when you do need 911? In rural areas it won't work anyway but theoretically?
