Now the ecological problem lies with *dead* hippos gumming up the rivers.
There's a great book called River of Teeth, which is a western with hippos. "An 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe." It's loosely inspired by a 1910 plan to release hippos into the bayous to eat invasive water hyacinth.
Hippos are intense.
