The technical proficiency needed to properly secure a basic home network is too high.
Most network devices that are mass-market and easy to use have major security risks, either from enabling a lot of stuff you don't need by default or simply having badly written firmware. Or, they are designed to spy on you.

I've never used one, but I've heard good things about Firewalla. The price is quite steep for what it is, especially when you factor in the need to buy separate WAPs. I wouldn't even consider the two cheapest options that lack gigabit ports.
If someone I knew was building a home network from scratch, I'd probably recommend gear from Ubiquiti or Aruba InstantON.
@voltronic I’ve tried several— you’re spot on with this assessment.
Firewalla has gotten about as close as I can recommend to non-technical folks that at least know a little bit about computers or networking.
If you know cautions in that product, please share. If you have better options, bless you for recommending.
