PSA for anyone running new plumbing in their home: These nail-in joist hangers for PEX water pipe are for crap. My house is less than 10 years old and I've already had 3 of them break, and some near junctions which is extra bad.

Today I installed the type you see on the right throughout the main run through the house, whether there was a broken nail-in hanger there or not. Still plastic, but the force is much better distributed. Plus, it gave me an opportunity to use the impact driver!

@lacuda
I considered the ones made for copper pipe, but I couldn't find them with the rubber cushion. So I went with something specifically endorsed for use with PEX.

@voltronic Hmm. Never had a problem with the former kind. Interesting that they broke. The ones our company used were very hard to break. It took a lot of twisting to break them. Those others are just as good, and they will allow the PEX to move a little in them as they expand or contract from water temp.

@Reuven
Maybe a few of them were whacked a bit too hard during install and were cracked to start with. The ones that failed all did so in about the same spot.

I'd wager that the ones the plumber used allow more movement than the new ones I put in. These are pretty snug.

@voltronic Possibly, the ones we used could not be broken with a hammer. They weren’t rigid, I used to take a pair of pliers and twist them off the pipe if I needed to move pipe temporarily, then put them back. Took a lot to break them. IIRC, Sioux Chief manufactured the ones we used.

@Reuven
Those sound really well made. The ones in my house are very stiff plastic; they have almost no compliance.

@voltronic Doesn’t sound like what we used. But, anyway, the ones you found will work very well.
