I don't know of any specific guide to point you to.
All I do is take my important stuff and burn it to disc a couple times each year.

Those are good as well. I do periodic disk images with Macrium Reflect.
It's equally as important, if not more so, to back up your data in a way that can be accessed independently of your installed operating system.
