Don't know if CSO still does it, but when I was in school they sold student tickets to the main floor at dirt cheap prices. First date with my now spouse.

Lots of orchestras do that. It's a great idea. Season ticket holders cancel, students get in for cheap, orchestra gets a full house.
I had the same experience as you (different big city with major orchestra), and my wife and I used to go together when we were dating in college.
^ For those who don't know this piece, hang on through the first minute of harsh dissonance, and you will be be rewarded with some absolute bad-asserey. No one does that better than the CSO brass section.
