yall does anyone know what to say to someone who tells you merry christmas when your jewish or do you just go along with it (pls dont attack me for being jewish)

@v_e_n_u_s why not just say Happy Holidays back to them. I don’t think people say it in a mean way…I mean how old are these ppl saying this to you? I truly didn’t realize saying Merry Christmas to everyone was wrong until I started working full time in an office. That’s just my two cents

@Patti1120 thank you so much for the advice, I'm going to follow it <3

@v_e_n_u_sI am a person who celebrates Christmas, I could cope with being told you didn't celebrate Christmas. I would ask what you celebrate and wish you well. But that's just me. I don't think I would even be embarrassed.

@v_e_n_u_s I go along with it. Doesn't hurt anything. Now if they're offensive in some way I might say something different. We always celebrated both traditions.

@v_e_n_u_s
That person is probably being pleasant in the way they know how to.

If it's a stranger or casual wirk acquaintance, I'd just smile & say "you, too!" Or similar. If it's someone you know a little better or have more contact with, you might say " we've got some great Hannukah plans - you have a lovely holiday, too."

@v_e_n_u_s I agree with others that most likely the person is using it as a generic pleasantry without thinking others might not celebrate. Returning a bland pleasantry could suffice unless you’re up for the “I’m not observant” discussion. How about replying, “…and a Happy New Year to you!” Kind of noncommittal about the Xmas part but still festive.

@v_e_n_u_s It depends. I will sometimes thank them and wish them the same. If I want to make it a teachable moment, I wish them a happy Chanukah. There are still large swaths of the US where Christians have never (knowingly) met a Jew.

@v_e_n_u_s
If you feel safe doing so just politely say thank you but I’m Jewish and don’t celebrate Christmas. So much today depends on how safe you feel saying who you are. Personally I respond with “Bah, humbug!”, but I’m old and better able to get away with being a cranky old broad.
