^^^ I could easily be impartial. I've done it before. I had to convict a woman I had great compassion about here situation. I also believe that the law she broke was a badly thought out law (this was welfare fraud around food stamps.)

There was plenty of reasonable doubt up until she testified. Dammit. It was clear she met the criteria in her own words.

It was sad. But I had to vote guilty.

@ucantstop_me what was the final outcome for her? Jail time or had to pay back?

@Patti1120 I wish I knew. I was 8 months pregnant and I never followed up.

We deliberated over the sentence. I fought hard on that one. Some dude stands up and wants to give her a year cuz my tax money bla bla bla

There was a charge for each month she was in violation. That was 21 months. I asked him if he thought she should get 21 years.

I sent a question to the judge on whether each conviction would be served consecutive or concurrent.

He said it doesn't matter

@Patti1120

I was incredulous. But judge said it's our job to determine penalty for the charge (of which there were 21)

So we/jury bickered a while. One lady was very worried about the defendant's children going to foster care because she was abus3d terribly growing up in foster.. I think her experience helped tame the Neanderthals

We gave a sentence of 3.5 weeks.
Her lawyer seemed pleased.

@Patti1120 ^^ I found that understanding other people's life experiences is critically important. It fosters empathy and compassion which, at some point will humans will pivot to a peace footing. (Not violence and war footing) else we go extinct

Weird sidenote. I suspect much of the war on DEI is to keep is in conflict so they can keep their power and wealth.

Peace cannot be forced. It comes from within each of us.

@ucantstop_me I just ask because it happened to my mom. The state made her pay back money she truly didn’t have just so we could have food in the house for a week until her first paycheck came in.
