PATREON and Anonymity

you can sign up for PATREON using your ID and screen name here .. (see picture)

your email will not be shown
you do need credit card or paypal info entered but ALL that is private even from the ppl you donate to..

so your name is not revealed

When you first create the account it may populate the user name with yours after you put payment info in.. but you can change it right away. counter.social/media/TKxVprRfv

@5ugarcane sure thing..

I figured the whole anonymous/security thing might scare ppl off but I have been a member of Patreon (for other creators) for 3 years so I am comfortable with it..

@ucantstop_me I’ve seen quite a few people reveal their name while donating to various websites, because they didn’t realize which fields would remain private, or if they had to use their real names. It’s good to know.

@5ugarcane yea lol

all the real name and address info (as well as credit or paypal numbers) are protected under PCI - so that's not even visible to J

now (full disclosure) Patreon had a breach a few years ago.. but if I let data breaches stop me I would never buy anything online

and yes, I (my CC) have been compromised many times. but they just send a new card and ur done.

you can't be breach-proof but banks are getting good at stopping the fraud and sending new cards faster.

@ucantstop_me Yes, unfortunately....just try to limit the damage.

@5ugarcane YES!!

considering I investigate credit card breaches for a living (part of my job anyway) - you can't avoid getting hit --- even from brick and mortar stores (target, home depot etc)

so we just keep an eye on our statements and I limit my online purchases ot one card (AND NOT A DEBIT.. cuz there are fewer protections from fraudulent purchases with a debit than visa or mc.

@ucantstop_me @5ugarcane Oh, I’m bookmarking this and putting you in my contacts. I had 3 breeches in a row and then locked down my account with various security protocols.

@ucantstop_me Good to know. It’s happened to me multiple times. CC companies made good on it, but told me it was not being investigated. They have too much fraud.

@5ugarcane

banks algorithms are getting much better - if they have xxx amount of fraud complaints and yyy percent of those shopped at zzz store.. they call the store and have them start investigating..

BUT usually at a whiff of possible fraud.. they apply those "markers" to other accounts and just replace the card..

these thieves sell cards in large batches - and I have had my card replaced several times before my number got soled and used..

@ucantstop_me That makes sense. I can’t imagine the volume of fraud they see now, or what the line of the P&L looks like. Lolol

@5ugarcane yea.. I have no idea.. I work for the retail end of things.. not the banks..

but I can't imagine the amount of write offs they do..

that's why it's much cheaper for them to replace cards at first hit of fraud - so anyone who shopped at xxx store. would get their cards replaced if a certain amount of fraud was suspeted

@ucantstop_me Thanks for giving us tips and inside info on all that.
