Two fun-facts I recently learned:

1. Us mammals are saved from many fungal diseases because those fungi can't thrive inside such a warm body.

2. Fungal adaptation to rising global temperatures could quickly change this.

@DallasBarnett Literally, or is this just a really good joke? Haven't followed it. πŸ˜…

@tyote First scene in E1 of the series starts out with a press interview with exactly this scenario. The Zombie fungus that takes over ants and other insects evolves to survive mammalian body temps

@DallasBarnett Well, now I've gotta give it a watch/play! Here's hoping it isn't predicting the future...

@tyote Combination of some wild pandemic and hubris is going to end humanity I fear. Last 3 years has really highlighted that fact.

@tyote If temperature were a selective force then I would bet on the thermophilic fungi, which currently thrive @ temperatures up to 60Β°C. Human body temperature is 37Β°C. Yes, there currently are fungi capable of surviving at human body temperatures though none from this group has affected humans. Thermophilic fungi are normally used for large-scale production of several compounds by fermentation such as degradation of crude oil and refined petroleum pollutants. Candida arias is one to look for.
