If the person whose grave they were at was a rocker, it might be a gesture of respect for them.

We played my mom's favorite music at her wake, and some folks would find several of those songs inappropriate--especially Queen's Fat Bottom Girls.

But given the context, you're probably right and it's just people who don't know how to act.
