@QEBrian My grandma used to get those mealy apples all the time, and I didn't know apples could be nice and crisp. The way I'd eat them was to make them into apple sauce by banging them against my head until it was mushy in the skin, and then I'd bite the skin and suck the juices out. Then I heard they are only good for baking or apple sauce and I realized that's what kid me seemed to figure out intuitively.
