A lot of people say that friends or family will only communicate by FB. Well, if they care so little that they'll only communicate through FB, maybe _they're_ not worth the effort?

How hard do we want to work to keep people who won't keep us back unless we use a specific app for their convenience?

For work? If enough people stop using it, another non-issue.

I dunno why people like drinking poison so much. All the uncool kids are doing it.

Seriously, if you have a relationship that will go away because it only happens on Facebook (or Xitter, or wherever), then _maybe that relationship isn't worth keeping_.

If the other person can't be arsed to stay in touch any other way, _maybe they're not worth your time and energy_. Maybe them not being willing to communicate any other way is a sign they don't really care about _you_?

I get that some folks have a boss that makes them have a presence. I even get that some people have made FB (or others) part of their own personal business.

But for fuck's sake, making yourselve dependent and beholden to a giant corporation that doesn't give a shit about you or else you can't get work done? You might as well go get a corporate slave job anyway at that point. You're still wearing a collar.

If we stop giving away our power, we'll have the power to make our own way.

@AskTheDevil I walked away from FB back when they started trying to force people to use their real names, I have someone I don't want to find me and I found the whole thing offensive for several reasons. I lost touch with several people completely, and in looking at the relationship we had, I am unbothered by the loss.

@tippitiwichet That bothered me enough when I _was_ using my "real" name (i.e. my actual born legal identity) for all my online interactions.

The best part was the months of hassle getting them to believe it was my real name in the first place. I have a somewhat uncommon name, so they insisted it must be fake.

One of the reasons I used my real name was because I was a contact person for communities that faced persecution. The people I served could _not_ use their real names online for safety!

@AskTheDevil Months? Damn. They really want people's personal info, huh?

@tippitiwichet The only reason I even went through all the bullshit was because a place I worked at asked me to.

But yeah, I had to repeatedly send pictures of my driver's license, legal documents, etc., signed affidavits. This was when they'd first instituted the policy and it didn't even feel like they'd thought it out. I had a friend create an account where they said their name was Zorg and sent in a picture of a fake ID where they were an alien, but FB didn't accept my actual ID.

@AskTheDevil Lol, Zorg. That's interesting. Wow they got a look at a ton of your documents. Fuck FB. Never again. Sounds like you were on a list of people they specifically wanted info about. You should have a warm and cozy feeling for that honor, you have caught the eye of The Man™️.

@tippitiwichet I'm fairly certain they were not specifically targeting me. They just came up with a huge paradigm change that they dumped on the lowest-level employees to figure out, under the auspices of pointy-haired middle managers.

@tippitiwichet I've had security clearance jobs (and jobs where I was supposed to have clearance to look at things, but nobody arsed themselves like they should have).

My official identity is fairly boring, really. No crimes, no major rabble-rousing, no fraud, no threatening people, no seeking a name for myself or popularity (it's nice not to feel peer pressure). Rarely (though not never) in the papers/media.

I can't learn what regular lives are like if never live any.
