2 good tips on manipulating people from the dude who taught Dr. Phil (my old prof):
Praise them for behaving the way you wish them to behave, they will rise to meet the praise. (Followed by an example of how he used "I can see you are willing to be reasonable and cooperate" on an uncooperative person.)
Tell them they are feeling what you want them to feel. (Adrenaline gets us excited, but our interpretation of events relies on external cues, as can be seen in "misattribution of arousal".)
