Like Sunn, my great grandfather was a geechee and the Gullah language is ... unique. A lot of his language was passed down but eventually lost as white oppressors decided to do everything in their power to stamp out any other language other than their approved versions. As of now Sunn m'Cheaux is the first and so far only instructor of Gullah at Harvard and I'm thankful that he exists to continue educating people and teaching the language.

Today, “aks” is also found in UK varieties of English, including Multicultural London English. This dialect, spoken mainly by people from ethnic minority backgrounds, came about through contact between different dialects of English and immigrant languages, including Caribbean Creoles, such as Jamaican Creole.

The example of “aks” neatly demonstrates the absurdity, the baselessness and, crucially, the pernicious impact of deeming any one form of English to be “correct”.

Linguicism is an idea invented by human-rights activist and linguist Tove Skutnabb-Kangas to describe discrimination based on language or dialect. The prejudice around “aks” is an example of linguicism.

The “s” and “k” being interchanged in “aks” and “ask” is an instance of what linguists call metathesis – a process which is very common. For example, wasp used to be pronounced “waps” but the former has now become the go-to word.

The redesigned Fifth Avenue nearly doubles sidewalk width to 33.5 feet on each side, providing 25 feet of unobstructed walking space and an additional 8.5-foot segment for trees.

With each block accommodating around 5,500 pedestrians per hour on average, and up to 23,000 during holiday seasons, the current setup struggles to manage this foot traffic volume. This challenge is exacerbated by the pedestrian space being further reduced.

The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, along with the Future of Fifth Partnership, announced plans to transform Fifth Avenue, between Bryant Park and Central Park, into a pedestrian-centered boulevard. The project includes expanding sidewalks by 46%, reducing traffic lanes, improving pedestrian safety with shorter crosswalks, and adding greenery and lighting.

The interior design of Muraba Veil takes inspiration from traditional Arabian homes, particularly the concept of the inner courtyard.

The residences are designed to offer privacy and a sense of tranquility, reflecting the traditional architectural focus on seclusion and a connection to nature.

At 22.5 meters wide, the 73-storey building features 131 units, ranging from two to five-bedroom residences, each spanning the full width of the tower. The design allows for views and access to outdoor spaces, balancing aesthetics with functional living.

The tower's narrow, vertical form is intended to complement Dubai's architectural landscape while maintaining a connection with its natural surroundings through innovative design approaches.

Muraba and RCR Arquitectes, recipients of the 2017 Pritzker Prize, have collaborated on Muraba Veil, a modern architectural project in Dubai that aims to incorporate traditional elements alongside contemporary innovation.

This 380-meter-high tower is the latest result of a decade-long partnership between Muraba, a Dubai-based developer, and RCR Arquitectes, a Spanish architectural firm.
