We are expecting a repairman in the kitchen so I had to take down all the naughty gingerbread snowmen and snowwomen from the fridge. To replace them, I whipped up some whimsical but much less naughty bunny butt magnets. Cute as a button, eh?
(No actual bunnies were harmed in the manufacturing process.)
@LlamaMountainStudioArts She did the "mine now" thing on one of the recent cedar pens and the last bowl (pix in timeline) so I think she's happy. But I've been using up the last of the scraps from this batch of cedar and have half a dozen pens with no home. I haven't even posted all the pix because at some point it becomes spam. (Oh look, T.Rob made another cedar pen. Give it a rest, dude.) So, yeah, DM if you want one. This place has DM, yeah? I actually haven't checked yet.
@Spagesgallo1 The cloak covers the stand so I thought it would take her a while to find, but she spotted it right away. I guess his posture was much improved! She came in and gave me a kiss, then left with him. About 5 minutes later I heard her laugh when she found the engraving, then I got another kiss. Mission accomplished!
@LlamaMountainStudioArts Awww! Would you like a hand-made pen as a consolation prize?
The wife complained that Grogu should have come with a stand because he keeps falling over. So while she was napping today I made a stand out of some scrap walnut and engraved instructions for use onto it.
@KarenSohne Thanks for the kind words!
The first pic is the intact cookie The lighter ring of sapwood surrounds the darker heartwood.
Close-up photo shows where the sapwood juts inward, revealing contours of a much younger tree. As it grew, bark was included at the center of those.
Small inclusions are OK but large ones can cause the wood to fly apart when turning and are dangerous. Any of the wood at the edge or where sapwood intrudes must be worked with caution.
@Eponine Thanks! The more of this wood I turn, the more amazed I am that it sat in a guy's back yard for a decade and he gave it to me from a "free wood wanted" post on NextDoor. It would have been hauled off as trash except that it weighed ~300 lbs or so and was too much trouble to move. The guy couldn't believe his luck that someone would come haul it off at no charge. Serendipity, thy nickname is Cedar. ;-)
#hotoffthelathe tonight is a turned and carved cedar bowl at 6.25" wide x 2.5" tall. Wife gave me a Master Carver Pro for Christmas which I used to carve out the 1" high band of dimples along the outer rim. This piece is from an outer section of log that grew into itself, leaving the bark inclusion in the bottom right and swirled grain like a burl.
@TybeeMedia Because it tuned into cable news and decided there's no intelligent life here?
@Former5SportOfficial When MSNBC decanted Kornacki out of cryo-stasis he said "Is it 2024 already?" and they said "You aint gonna believe this..."
@DeadlyAccurate Santos won the top position in the United Nations by arm wrestling Boutros Boutros-Ghali so it seems like Speaker of the House would be easy-peasy for him.
#hotoffthelathe tonight is a Majestic style rollerball pen made from cedar burl. The second photo shows the pen blank before it was cut from the slab. The cap barrel is beautiful in its own right and would be stunning on almost any pen. But the burl in the bottom section makes the cap look bland by comparison.
We normally don't do exotic textiles like ostrich or snake, but my wife fell in love with this mummy-skin lamp shade and I caved.
I make stuff with code and with wood. Just, you know, not at the same time.
