One of the better studio stories comes from this recording: Mick Fleetwood was playing drums, and insisted on repeated takes through the night. Waddy W was leading the session - when he said, after take 66 or so, "I think we're done," Mick replied, "We're never done, Waddy." (They used take 2).

@Animeraider Oh, agreed - many great recordings end with a fade, and some are quite well executed.
Dare not speak for JI, but in my case, I think of writing an ending part of writing the song (youthful composition training rearing it's ugly head?). There's always an exception, of course - last one on the project in progress is a natural for a fade, tho haven't committed to that just yet...
This one is fifty this year - egad.

@Idissent My various stepchildren and in-laws mostly came to know me during my career as a church musician. Their reaction, since my exit from that world, to the re-emergence of the vocabulary I acquired as a kid, in music school, and in bands has been no small source of amusement for my wife.
