I know! Or rather, I didnโ€™t know, until you drew my attention to it! ๐Ÿ˜น

@stueytheround

I personally think they were just really good lyricists and were looking for things that scanned well. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@amarand Given that the song is filled with memories, I'm thinking they were reminiscing about a good teenaged night out ๐Ÿคฃ

@stueytheround

I have always assumed that a lot of the โ€œPenny Laneโ€ era lyrics were nonsense, not to be interpreted literally. Itโ€™s incredible to think about when The Beatles were famous and popular, things were drastically different.

@amarand
Oh no. Penny Lane in Liverpool is a very real place, my Mum used to get her fish and chips in the very takeaway alluded to in the lyrics.
The roundabout where the "pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray" was a popular teen hangout. Some of the characters are made up, and of course there's plenty of artistic license but the general idea is based in reality. ๐Ÿ˜

@ecksmc I knew about "a four of fish" but had no idea about the "finger pies". I just thought they were being silly, a bit like Queen's "Fried Chicken" at the end of One Vision! @amarand

@stueytheround was a guy from Greenwich that told me what it meant years ago back in mid-90's - i thought it was just a clever play on words like you say being silly

@amarand

@stueytheround I thought today was "Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar-Allan-Poe".
