Today in "Beatles lyrics you don't *really* understand:
"A four of fish and finger pies" Penny Lane #CosoMusic
@CinnamonGirlE I do now! ๐คฃ๐ฑ
A four of fish
Finger pies
Sounds nice! ๐น
@stueytheround
Something about lunch? ๐ค
@amarand Oh my! ๐คฃ
I know! Or rather, I didnโt know, until you drew my attention to it! ๐น
@amarand I had no idea! ๐คฃ
I personally think they were just really good lyricists and were looking for things that scanned well. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
@amarand Given that the song is filled with memories, I'm thinking they were reminiscing about a good teenaged night out ๐คฃ
I have always assumed that a lot of the โPenny Laneโ era lyrics were nonsense, not to be interpreted literally. Itโs incredible to think about when The Beatles were famous and popular, things were drastically different.
@amarand
Oh no. Penny Lane in Liverpool is a very real place, my Mum used to get her fish and chips in the very takeaway alluded to in the lyrics.
The roundabout where the "pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray" was a popular teen hangout. Some of the characters are made up, and of course there's plenty of artistic license but the general idea is based in reality. ๐
thought you'd have known that lol
@stueytheround was a guy from Greenwich that told me what it meant years ago back in mid-90's - i thought it was just a clever play on words like you say being silly
@stueytheround I thought today was "Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar-Allan-Poe".
@stueytheround Uh oh, you *really* opened a can ...๐คฃ
@stueytheround
Do you know what that means?
