I'm gonna do the "Back In My Day" whine.
I want to see Cocaine Bear & I asked a few friends, only one is interested in being entertained by a boisterously goofy coked-up bear ๐Ÿ˜
I looked up the theater, (also used the Fandango app, which I've never much cared for), & it appears that when buying a tix, you now have to specify what seat you want. W-T-F??
How the hell do you coordinate sitting together w/ others? I can't imagine doing this back when there'd be 5+ of us going to see a flick.

So CoSonauts, how the heck do me and my friend buy tickets, separately, to the same movie and get seats next to each other? Is everyone supposed to log into the theatre site at the same time, be like talking to each other on the phone as each person selects their seat at the same time??

Why the fuck are movie theatres requiring you to choose the seat you want when you buy the damn ticket??

@see_the_sus You'd do the same for concerts--have one person buy the tickets, and have your friends electronically transfer funds to your bank (before or after), *or* pay you the cash (before or after).

@ChillySnowgirl

For concerts I can understand but geesh, it's just a movie!

It's a good thing this system wasn't in place when I was in college cause there's no way the groups of friends I'd go to a movie with would be able to coordinate this. Just trying to decide what pizza we wanted to order took forever! ๐Ÿ˜†

@see_the_sus I see your point (and i agree) that it's silly. On the flip side, Covid hit theatres hard for the last few years & they're likely looking for ways to try and fill seats more efficiently to make up for the last 2 yrs being "lean". This might be the way to do that. Alternatively, the theatre selling advance tickets means that they'll have a better idea how many might be attending & if they had the option, they might be able to cancel if say only 5 tickets were sold.

@ChillySnowgirl

Selling in advance doesn't bug me. It's the reserved seating that is now required that I find stupid and frustrating.

@see_the_sus It wouldn't be as hard as concert tickets though. Unless the movie is super popular (in that case there'd be more viewings anyway), and presuming that the tickets are the same price, so you just have to get an idea of front/middle/back. Make a rule that the person who bitches about the seats has to do the purchasing the next time. ๐Ÿ˜œ

@ChillySnowgirl

I'll make a note of that if/when I go see a movie again at a major theatre. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@see_the_sus @ChillySnowgirl

Conversely, we've appreciated being able to lock down seats where we want them or, if we can't sit where we prefer at the 5:30, we might look at the 6:15.... It means we don't have to hurry through (or skip) food on the way, for example, to be certain we're not sitting too close or whatever.

@CLManussier @ChillySnowgirl

And none of this has ever been a major concern for me but I try to make sure I'm getting to such places with plenty of time to not have to rush. That and I rarely buy food at a theatre.

@see_the_sus

I haven't set foot in a theatre in over 20 years; I had no idea they do this now.

Grr!

@XaoslordErie

This first came to my attention when I heard ๐Ÿ‘‡ story on NPR last month. At the time I wasn't thinking about going to see a movie with others. Then I went to the Cinemark site to look up movie times and...

@Boyceaz @XaoslordErie

How come I never think of these brilliant ideas! ๐Ÿ˜ญ

@CLManussier

What a pain in the ass.

What happens if by the time the person gets all the money from everyone, they go to buy the tickets and there are no more seats together? Do you then have to contact everyone and ask, "Ok folkies, whatcha wanna do now?"

*grumble*

@see_the_sus
I mean, you can do it in the other direction: one person grabs the seats and then tells everyone what their cut is.

But, like, really, it's not that complicated if you're ALREADY having the back & forth w/a group as to what movie, what theater, what day, what showing, to then have one more text w/the group, "I'll get the tix, everyone send $15 to @xxwhateverxx...."

People really DO do this all the time.

@CLManussier

I'm sure some do. I never have. I only started using Venmo last year, or maybe in 2021 & I think I've made maybe 6 transactions on it.

My issue is mainly w/ the requirement of reserving a specific seat. I find this process as adding another layer to having to make a decision.

My life is extremely chaotic right now & the less trivial stupidity I have to deal with, the better. And yes, having to coordinate a Venmo transaction is a pain in the ass for me at this moment in my life.

@see_the_sus
I watched Screen Rantโ€™s Pitch Meeting on Cocaine Bear and came way with the conclusion that you are about to see very little bear in this bear movie named after a bear. Mostly lots of annoyingly foolish people and their relatives.

(Pitch Meetings are on YouTube and they are hilariously accurate)
