Does anyone know if it's ok to tape a birth certificate? Or even laminate it?
As in, does it make it somehow no longer valid for government purposes? I've moved so many times & had to drag out my papers (I was born in Italy on a US military base) that the poor things are rather worn.

They make clear plastic sleeves you can slip things into and out of. That might be a solution.

@AskNick True. Sometimes I wonder why my brain loves to shut off and stop being logical. 🤔 🤦

All of us know more than any of us. Sometimes it just takes a slightly different perspective.

And, trust me, my perspective is different!

@see_the_sus get a new copy from the state dept. I had a similar issue, and now my original is protected and I use the reissued one instead.

@Clintudy There's an idea I hadn't thought about. Thanks!
For a number of years, I got a snarky thrill out of seeing the confusion on the faces of DMV people but after a while, it gets annoying when you're told over and over again, "This isn't a legitimate US birth certificate," or "We've never seen anything like this and don't think we can accept it," or "We'll have to call the state office and fax a copy to them for approval." 🤦

@see_the_sus Lamination may not be acceptable if they can't "feel" the seal... If you have a food saver, try putting the paperwork in that with a bit of posterboard to keep its shape. You can always remove it from the vacuum seal when required and then reseal it for storage when done.

@TG2 Oh excellent idea! Thanks and yes I do have a food saver. 😀

@see_the_sus maybe make a copy and laminate it? That’s what my dad did and its just stuck in my head to keep the original as is but you can make a copy and laminate that. I could be totally wrong though haha

@Fiddies2 I'm going to go w/ the suggestions from others and get a new one from the State Dept, so I can leave my old one at home and also get some of those plastic folder sleeves.

@see_the_sus that seems much smarter than mine hahaha I’m glad they helped!

@Fiddies2 I'm still shaking my head that for some absurd reason my brain never thought of this. I truly need a brain transplant cause mine has grown too old. 🤦‍♀️

Clint and Tommy are on the ball, here -- often verification involves checking the seal or other security measures, so don't laminate. (SS cards are notorious for being laminated and shouldn't be.) If your cert is in bad shape, best to just apply to the State Dept for a new one.
