Sooo... *is* really going to shut down in Brazil? I understand a court has ruled that it must, but... what levers do they actually have to enforce that?

Wasn't a big part of the dispute s/t like "hey, you need to have a presence in Brazil, with employees we can arrest, and you don't have that"?

@rpardee

Well, what I can tell you is that Brazil successfully blocked Telegram for 2 days in March 2022 until Telecom complied. I don't know how, but they did.

@arthurpendragon @rpardee they do it by getting Internet service providers to block access

And set fines if they don't as well as doing same with app stores who'll have to remove any app, like X, or face fines - daily fines as well

@rpardee

"justice gave internet service providers and app stores five days to block access to X, and said the platform will stay suspended until it complies with his orders. He established the same deadline for app stores to remove virtual private networks, or VPNs, and set a daily fine of 50,000 reais ($8,900) for people or companies using them to access X."

They can fine ISPs and VPNs as well as app stores that's the levers they pull to enforce it
