shouldn't news outlets report epicenter depth as well as richter scale measure for earthquakes? I recall reading reports years ago that would say things like "yeah, it was an 8.1, but the epicenter was seven miles down & so it wasn't as bad as you'd think..."

Makes sense actually. My dad told me that when they were building the Broad Street subway, the contractor bid based on the assumption that South Broad Street was built on the same type of bedrock as North Broad Street and wouldn’t need any structures built to support the walls. There were huge cost overruns when they realized it was much softer soil.

The bedrock on North Broad is so shallow the houses are built on raised banks so they could create basements.
