Started a discussion w @sfleetucker the other day and I wanted to re-up this part: Black ppl in the US cannot be racists. They can be bigots, they can have prejudice and hate. But racism is supported by history, institutions, and a large-scale societal context of white supremacy. Because of the context and institutions they can rely on, it is only whites who can be racists.

@publickovacs @sfleetucker I agree, although the people you hope this would reach may likely immediately go defensive and recount any number of real or imagined anecdotes about the one time a black person had power over them in an isolated circumstance.

I know you are right. But whatever small part I can play in underlining the importance of context, history, institutional stuff baked into what we may think are individual actions, I insist on doing.
