Day 10: Vivian Maier

2. Thomas Nast

From the Bill of Rights Institute:

"Tweed feared Nastโ€™s cartoons to a much greater extent than newspaper articles, because many of his constituents were illiterate, and he even offered Nast a bribe to stop these public criticisms. Tweed was right to fear this criticism because Nastโ€™s cartoons helped lead to his downfall and arrest in 1876. Tweed died in jail in 1878, and Nast continued to draw for Harperโ€™s Weekly until 1886."

Absolute legend. No notes.

Oh come on. Does anyone believe this was an accident? He criticized the war in Ukraine. "Falling" out of a window is putin's response, it's not like it's the first time

There is a word in English that I saw defined _one_ time, and cannot remember, and couldn't find the original source.

It means a person who tends to be law abiding, but not because they ascribe to any authority of law, but because they happen to be good participants in the social contract and tend to have personal ethics that mean they _happen_ to not break any laws (like, they don't lie, kill, cheat, steal, etc., just not because there's a law or punishment).

Anyone know it?

Rain is not ideal on the day electronics are supposed to arrive.

Just peeked in for a bit. Need to get some sleep now.

We're halfway through the month and we're at 37% funded. This place is and will always be free. No algorithm cramming content down your gullet. Your posts, art, thoughts, links... won't train an AI to turn you into a commodity (though @Alfred is fantastic). No data to be harvested.

If you can't, don't worry about it. But if you can go because this is the finest community I've found and I've been internetting for over 30 years.

We're going to need places like this more in the future.

The magnificent Captain Carrot. He's getting a radiation treatment for hyperthyroidism on Tuesday. He'll be emitting gamma for 2 weeks, so I'll have to make sure he doesn't get angry.

I have to keep him away from me, and that's gonna be hard on both of us.
