This is my dad. He volunteered to fight Fascists during WWII.

He was a Republican.

During training to becoming a radio operator, he contracted both rheumatic fever and whooping cough. After six months in a Navy hospital, he was honorably discharged. He then donated to the DVA every year for the rest of his life. While going through his paperwork after he died, my mom found his disabled vet card. None of us had known.
