@peterquirk

I think it would sorely help if we flipped the cultural branding on them. The term "smart device" makes them seem too classy.

Personal panopticons, maybe?

@MLClark Manufacturers of trackers, in particular, should be required to publish a book, available to anyone, which documents all the bad things that can be done with a tracker. It should include information to help you determine whether you are subject to tracking.

@AkomoCombine Except for the built-in surveillance software - Waze.

@peterquirk

All devices can do this. You can live in the woods and not be connected at all.

Or just use it when you need to- the choice is yours

When it comes to these devices you ARE going to give up something about yourself.

The question is how much do you give up?

Being on this site , you already did that as well.

@AkomoCombine I'm reallytalking about the ambient surveillance devices - Alexa, Nest, Ring, Smart TVs with voice or gesture control, certain, Sleep Number beds, connected cars, connected gym equipment, etc.. In theory, Wi-Fi emanations from your house encode information about the physical location of people in the house, but I'm not aware of any generally available commercial devices that exploit interference patterns yet.

@peterquirk

Wow im ancient - i got a smart tv and a smart phone- my interwebz is wired and i dont live in a house- cant afford it.

The only device that stays connected all the time is my computer if i choose so.

Cripes i dont even print on wifi- i plug in the printer when i need to- LOL!

i guess being lower middle class does have some advantages eh?๐Ÿคฃ

@AkomoCombine We're not dissimilar. My home internet is mostly wired, but with some mesh coverage for one end of the house. My printer is hardwired. I have a Smart TV, with all smart features turned off. My car is a 2007 Camry Hybrid. I have a Smartphone and a Garmin watch, with all sharing turned off. No Nest, Ring, Alexa, etc. Washer and dryer are 35 year old Maytag machines that I repair very occasionally. The only automation on the property is the sprinkler system.
