Scenario: an authoritarian government seizes control of all the Microsoft passwordless authentication servers in their country and turns them off. Authentication servers outside the country are blocked. The entire citizenry, including businesses, loses access to online banking and financial processing.

@paxterrarum

The "cloud" is just somebody's else's computer.
If you don't have 100% control of it, don't trust it.

It has become much easier, and cheap, to run you own "cloud". A single point of failure is always stupid.

@paxterrarum Arrghh! You're trying to start NY off with a dooms day scenario! Holy Moly! 🙂

That was my first thought when passwordless authentication started. This is why I don't use face or thumbprint for my cellphone. I have an 8 digit code to open phone. I should up to 13 or more.

Police can use face or thumbprint to open phones. Can't right away if they don't have password.

A lot of Hamas atrocities were sent to loved ones on their phones because of face or thumbprint authentication.
