June 1, 1966~ Approximately 2,400 persons attended White House Conference on Civil Rights. The aim of the conference was built on the momentum of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in addressing discrimination against African-Americans. The four areas of discussion were housing, economic security, education, and the administration of justice.

June 2, 1863 ~ Abolitionist and “Underground Railroad Conductor” Harriet Tubman leads a force of Union Army guerrilla soldiers into Maryland and frees more than 700 slaves. Tubman was one of the most noteworthy women in the anti-slavery struggle prior to the Civil War and became a leading voice in the call for the federal government to allow Blacks to fight in the war.

June 4, 1972 ~ College professor and activist Angela Davis is acquitted of charges that she assisted and conspired with the young men involved in a deadly 1970 shootout at the Marin County courthouse in CA in an attempt to free imprisoned Black activist George Jackson.
At least three people were killed and Davis spent 16 months in prison but on this day she was found not guilty of all charges by an all-White San Jose, Calif., jury.

June 5, 1973 ~ Doris A. Davis of Compton, California became the first female African American Mayor of a major metropolitan city in the United States. However, after four years as mayor she did not seek re-election.

June 6, 1971 ~ MLB Legend Willie Mays hits record 22nd (& last) extra inning HR.
Mays spent the majority of his MLB career as a center fielder with the New York and San Francisco Giants. He won two MVP awards and played in 24 All-Star Games. Growing opinion states that he was possibly the greatest all-around baseball player of all-time.

June 11, 1963 ~ President JFK declares that segregation was “morally wrong” and told the U.S. Congress it was “time to act” (pass legislation) to end all segregation of the races.
That statement and similar ones endeared Kennedy to millions of African-Americans. However, a few months after making the declaration, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, TX. But his vision lived on through LBJ's Civil Rights Act.

June 12, 1967 ~ Loving v. Virginia, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a Virginia law banning inter-racial marriage was unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment.
The plaintiffs in the case were Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and Black woman whose marriage was deemed illegal according to Virginia state law.
