Simple:
the severe erosion of public education in the US-- from "No child left behind" all the way to "Common Core" pseudo-implementation.
4 generations of children were never taught cursive writing, and many print their signatures and cannot read a single word of the US Constitution in it's original form.
take away education and it makes manipulation and slavery much easier.
