UK Supreme Court has ruled the Scottish government cannot hold an independence referendum without UK government's consent.
It is now official that there is no legal means by which the Scottish people can sever ties with the UK unless the UK permits it.
The UK is *not* a Union of consent. Scotland is a colony.
The next General Election will now become a de facto referendum on Scotland’s place in the UK. Bring it on.

Hold on. As I recall it was James VI of Scotland that became James I of England, not the other way round. The nations came together under one crown in political parity.
Pardon the gross oversimplification, but if I’m out with someone and I want to leave they have no say in the matter.
I obviously have lots to learn about the situation, but the fundamental idea seems to be one of the very definition of sovereign nation.

Although the crowns were United, Scotland and England remained very separate, distinct independent countries. The political union of 1707 did not diminish the retention of Scottish law.
And under Scottish law, and the Claim of Right, the Scottish people are sovereign, not the crown or the government.
