I'm just surprised that Mattis didn't quit sooner.
I uploaded this in 2016 because it seemed prescient at the time. Today...phew, even more so.

I haven't found my dad yet, but I heard he made it. My uncle was overcome by smoke while escaping and had a heart attack. He is currently in the hospital awaiting transport to a bigger hospital. No updates on his condition, but hes alive, too.

Death toll in the Camp Fire is up to 42; they're having to identify people via DNA because many of the bodies have been reduced to chips of burned bone.
No word on my father still.
Press briefing at 6:30 increased the number of fatalities from 9 to 23, including 4 from my father's area found in cars.
Relatives of people still missing are going to be asked to provide DNA samples in the next few days.
This is fucked.
I got confirmation from the Butte County Sheriff that my father's property was completely torched. They found no sign of him, but I'm not sure how well they were able to search, either...the area is still hot. He's not listed on the Safe and Well site. There's no centralized contact for the tens of thousands of people in shelters, and most shelters seem to have no associated phone number at all. I don't even know what hospital they're taking people to anymore.

It's within the former fire perimeter but it juuuuuuuuuust might have made it. Doesn't mean it actually did, or that it will exist 24 hours from now since the fire is not contained and the focus is on protecting Chico, but good grief this image illustrates the stress I'm feeling.
I made a report with the county sheriff earlier today but they have a lot on their plate. I don't expect to hear anything soon.
My father is one of those who lives in a rural area within the fire zone, and is currently unaccounted for.
Watching a live press conference about the Camp Fire in Paradise, California. 9 confirmed dead. Paradise is basically razed. 35 confirmed missing, hundreds more unaccounted for.
For those not familiar with the area, a large portion of Paradise and the affected surrounding areas is very rural. A lot of retired people and quite a few off the grid types, ie. people who might be hard to contact and warn to get out in time when a fire is burning at a rate of nearly a thousand acres an hour.
Fire is unfortunately the new normal out here, so prepare accordingly and in advance.
Avoid fancy-looking neoprene fashion statement masks because they're generally bullshit.
If you have kids/elderly or asthmatics among your family *or your pets*, invest in HEPA air cleaners for your home. Pets need to breathe clean air, too!
And FYI, acute asthma attacks can kill, and kill quickly. If you have severe asthma or any other breathing issues, and you live on the west coast, consider carrying an epipen. An inhaler won't help you if you can't inhale it!
PSA to everyone in California (or on the West Coast in general): I strongly suggest you go to Home Depot and pick up a pack of N95 or N99 respirators. They quickly sold out everywhere when Seattle had major fires, and even Amazon was backordered. You want ones with exhaust valves to facilitate comfortable breathing, and TWO straps, not earloops or a single strap! Surgical masks and bandannas don't make a good enough seal or have a tight enough weave to effectively filter out smoke.
