I'm just surprised that Mattis didn't quit sooner.

@malice there was supposedly a pact between the 3 actual adults in the admin to not leave the president unsupervised...he was the last one left...so...that's not great...

@opie Mattis is a public servant in the truest sense of the term. I always believed he stuck it out not because he supported Trump, but because he wanted to do his duty for the nation and he had a chance to maker a difference there.

Obviously he decided he had no chance.

@malice word on the street...and sort of explicitly in his letter...is that the withdrawal from Syria was the last straw for him...cuz I' assuming he vehemently opposed the move and the president ignored him, so I can see why he'd just say fuck it

@opie Well yeah. "We defeated ISIS"? That's straight up lying to please his base at the cost of everything.

@malice well...one day it was "we defeated them" and the next it was "they're not our problem, let russia deal with em"

@malice Ultimately the biggest disappointment in all of this is not that the officials quit the administration. It is that they sincerely thought that they could work for Donald Trump and be effective.
That speaks to a level of conceit combined with naivite that worries me.
