@Monty1234 Easy to run disinfo campaigns, radicalize, flip people, trick citizens into giving up info, etc.

@Monty1234 During the Cold War hostile foreign powers didn't have easy, instant access to the entire population of enemy countries. They do now, so that makes sense to me.

Man I love that Netflix releases new seasons of shows AT MIDNIGHT on the day of release. None of this pussyfooting until 9pm in all time zones. -- me, watching Black Mirror S4 right now

@Descry You're talking about something entirely different. I'm not talking about DDoS attacks, I'm talking about spam/psyops/shitposters/trolls, not server attacks.

@Descry How does IoT change the ratio of dedicated bad actors?

@stueytheround ...gonna have to say that my sympathy is nonexistant.

The Mastodon guy is also objectively wrong when he claims that regional blocks are ineffective because it won't stop dedicated bad actors. Most bad actors are bots or otherwise *not* dedicated - they rely on mass numbers. IP and proxy blocks won't stop all of them, but it hugely reduces them and makes it much more manageable for moderators. I'm a community manager by profession and barring Bangladesh/India/Russia/China almost nixes spam accounts, in my experience.

@jordicusmaximus @Monty1234 Yeah sometimes I feel left out because I'm not the type to automatically take sides. I want to know what the other side has to say.

Unfortunately, what they have to say tends to be a lot of "BAWWWWWWWWWWW!!!".

@Monty1234 Looked like a typical flamewar. Bunch of people arguing on both sides with no real interest in learning the opposing idea. I side with CoSo in general, but of the Mastodon people have legit beef (if CoSo really did break something unintended) then I'd like to see it proven. Until then, it's panicked squawking.

I'm also just really sick of people screaming "racist/nationalist" in response to anything that isn't a kumbaya hippie circle. I've known real nationalists; it's not a joke.

@Monty1234 I do too, but I certainly can't write in Japanese. Even if I were so inclined to chill with the pervs, I wouldn't be able to. So I'm not really seeing the issue.

I really am not seeing the big deal with other Mastodon sites isolating CoSo. I mean it sounds like they're being dicks, but who cares?

The #1 instance is a Japanese lolicon community - it's all drawings of foxes with dicks and sexualized preteen girls. All of the top 10 save for CoSo and the main Mastodon site are non-English. So sue me but are we REALLY missing out by not being able to cross message with them? Cuz I dunno about you guys but I don't chat up furries.

So I'm seeing a similarity between Melania Trump's bad selfie edit game and old Tool album cover art, and I'm a bit disturbed by it. Haha.

Girl, this is America. We don't allow bad use of the clone tool, here.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are times where I'm kinda happy to not have any local family connections, as all my friends are posting about arguing with their relatives at holiday get togethers. Seems like everyone has the racist uncle or born again aunt. Nah, I'm good.

@Stace IMO astrology is complete junk, and winter is my favorite season so no worries there.

According to this trending article on Twitter, today should be the WORST DAY OF 2017. That's a pretty high bar, tbh.

Bets on what could happen to make today live up to that hype?

@ZenJen53 Yeah. I mean, I'm pretty sure nobody is going to say Comey sexually assaulted them, or that Yates was taking bribes.

@USAPatriot @RAO It's definitely not. I live in Seattle, and Washington was the first state to announce a big "fuck you" against the repeal. They have every intention of enforcing those rules regardless of what the federal government says, and they're down for a fight. Last I looked, some 20 states had sued over it.
