Yesterday I was talking to my friend and I said “I struggle with reading social cues” and he said “that is a thing I’ve noticed about you” and then I felt kinda embarrassed. But I should’ve known he realized, because he sometimes privately explains jokes to me if he thinks I didn’t get it based on my response (which I don’t mind, because occasionally I DIDN’T get it.)

To varying degrees we all miss social cues. I wish there was a universal gesture for this so we could all embrace it when we realize we missed or misinterpreted something. Then we could join with each other rather than feel apart.

@ATXJane I love this idea. And that’s part of why I appreciate him explaining jokes to me even if I got them, because it feels like he’s on my side.

@lemontart

It sounds like he is on your side - and it’s a nice shared connection. 💛 One if my pretty reliably awkward moments is when I meet someone on the sidewalk & zig when I should’ve zagged - just as they are doing the same thing. I often try to just acknowledge it & make it a silly moment. I still feel embarrassed but usually we both lighten up. What a much better option - rather than walking away feeling self-conscious, we both get a light moment & a smile.
