I am working on some 3D granny squares that are part of a Frida Kahlo style summer shirt.

Let's just say some patterns are easier to understand than others. I had to do this one 3 times over the course of several hours (yikes!).

I think the final product will be pretty. And if I get too frustrated, I'll just use these squares on a hat or some other small project.

@Cmnslivn Thank you. Here is a pic that shows how the squares are used in the shirt. A fun, unserious summer top. :)

@Cmnslivn

Yes. I did not order their specific yarns, but am instead using what I have in my stash. I bought lots of cotton yarn from Hobbi.com last year, because it is difficult to find in the US. Not much variety of colors, weight, or texture.

@BlueStateBabe . I saw a sheet at the thrift store the other day that had the same bright colors and lively stripe patterns and I was so tempted to buy it to upcycle into a gathered tiered skirt. it would be perfect with your top. You are right about cotton yarn not available here in so many colors. I have wondered about Hobbi yarn. It looks like a decent quality. Have you been happy with it?

@Cmnslivn BTW, that skirt sound like fun!

Another great cotton yarn they carry is color shifting yarn made of 4 threads. The color shifts one thread at a time over the length of the cake, giving a nice, subtle change for most projects.

I made a sweater of their merino, and it was so stretchy that I needed something dif't for the cuffs and neck band. Was lucky to find a cotton/silk blend that was color matched, and it made nice sturdy cuffs/bands.

@Cmnslivn @BlueStateBabe I have purchased Hobbii yarn, and I am a fan.

If you look at their cakes, those are the long gradient yarns you were talking about. Watch for the difference between the Sultan (plied, no twist) and the Twister (plied and twisted). I found that the twisted version is a lot easier to work with on both the hook and the point. They are different materials, too, but 800-1K m is a ton of yarn to work with!

Yup!

I saw a person at a craft market who also said the same about Twister. I had only used Sultan and similar, and they can split badly, requiring you to stare closely at each stitch as you make it, which is very bad for my old eyes - strain kicks in in about 5 minutes and goes downhill from there.

I will have to watch for a Twister sale. I loved the other cotton cake yarns, because they were natural fibers. I don't think Twister is pure cotton. Will have to look again.

@BlueStateBabe @Cmnslivn I think the "Sultan Deluxe" has the twisted plies, whereas the regular Sultan is the 4 strands.

I did find that if I was using the non-twisted Sultan (Cotton Kings), if I threaded it thru a 6/0 bead it would really really help. I'd still have to pay attention, but it made them go 'together' before it got to my hook/needle.

@kismatt @Cmnslivn

I had difficulty with the bead threading, as they suggested. Maybe I had the wrong size...
