I wonder if people remember that a LOT of university tuition used to be free up until the mid 1960's. One of the main reasons it went to a fee-based system was to try to keep the non-white (and non-male) element out, because people like Ronald Reagan (yeah, him!!) proposed it in the late 60's to ...and I quote “get rid of undesirables […] those who are there to carry signs and not to study might think twice to carry picket signs.”

GOP strikes again.

@kismatt And then they handed over the financing of education to the banking interests.

@kismatt

To add: It was never free for me.

My bachelor's degree at the University of CA cost less per year than a year at a dorm with a 2 meal per day contract. If I remember correctly, tuition and fees were $250ish/term. Didn't matter how many units.

Now, at a community college, tuition is basically $140/credit hour. That's $2100, with another $200 plus for fees, so $2300/term.

At University of OR it is $4006 per term for residents.

Both calculated at 15 credits/term. 3 terms/year.

@BlueStateBabe My STL CC is $122 if you are a district resident, $171 in state but out of district, $233 out of state.

Per hour.

For community college.

Mizzou is $335.80 PER HOUR for in state residents.

Who would WANT to pay that???

@kismatt

UO is allegedly prestigious. Tuition, fees and room and board are more per year than many residents make!

I just remember arriving on campus, from a very poor CA town, dumbfounded at the teens driving Hummers and all sporting the latest apple everything - laptops, (at the time) iPods, phones, & having the money to dress in latest fashions and spend liberally at stores. Too many rich kids!

BTW - I had a tuition grant.

$335.80 per hour!?!?! GAWD! That's even worse than UO.
