We are not a proactive species. Never have been.

We don't collectively respond to a serious problem until we have no choice but to do so.

I suspect that we're renowned (and reviled) across the sentient universe for this condition. It undergirds our knack for creating our own misfortune, making us a potent cautionary tale.
