If anyone has tips for beginning bird watching I would open to reading them

the ebird and audubon apps are good for identifying and getting information on those you see.

The Merlin app has picture and sound ID tools. You can even look at specific locations to see what's been reported in the area. All with info on the specific birds too. It's free!
The eBird app is related to it, and you can record your observations on that app. Then you'll have a Life List of what you've seen so far and add on to it as you continue.
