Tonight, my wife and I went out to dinner. During the meal, the waitress came to check on us and asked how we were doing. My wife said we were talking about the D-Day commemoration we saw on TV earlier. The waitress looked confused. My wife said, “D-Day? June 6, 1944, Word War Two?” The waitress said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t know what that is.” She wasn’t a teenager or a bubblehead in her twenties, but a woman (she admitted) in her fifties.

How long ago did they stop teaching history in school?

@johnldeboer 💔 Depends on where you live, I think, I am from Cali graduating class '85 I remember a general going over of it but nowhere near what I learned from my mom's love of books !

@johnldeboer If you think that everyone has the same level of education......something something a mirror to reflect.

@MrGoat Well, whether she even went to school is actually beside the point. I don’t specifically remember learning about D-Day in class, but how can anyone who has a TV not know about that momentous day? It comes up every year, and there are countless movies that have at least a passing reference to it. So my wife and I could hardly believe her ignorance of that date in history.

@johnldeboer Think of how smart the average person is and then half that.

@MrGoat If intelligence includes curiosity about the world, its history, and current events, I agree with you. The waitress in question certainly lacked that.

@johnldeboer
a) If your waitress is 50 years old, then she is far too old for the education system to be at fault. How has she managed to avoid learning about D Day every June? This isn't the first year the media has covered it.

Saving Private Ryan? Band of Brothers?

b) You are assuming that she was an attentive student and attended school under ideal conditions.

@arthurpendragon Yes, you’re right. Her skill as a scholar is actually irrelevant, what with all the movies and TV shows referencing it, and the yearly reminders in the media, especially on the multiples-of-five years, like this year.

@johnldeboer In the old days many schools used history class as a place to stash football coaches. Instruction consisted of memorizing names and dates. Students "learned" that history was boring and useless.

Florida has taken it to a whole new level, erasing all history that doesn't flatter white people.

@johnldeboer There is a form 252 in the police dept. It is a statement form, given to witnesses so they can write what happened. No matter what their occupation, it was rare for me to find someone who could string together the words to fill one out. I usually ended up writing it for them and asking them to sign it if it were correct and true.So expecting ppl to have a basic knowledge of history when they don't is no surprise to me.

@johnldeboer Reagan started the defunding in public education so if she’s in her 50s the math is showing it is working

@TR_forester6291 I’ve had several posts the last few days, so don’t know which one - if any - you’re referencing.

@johnldeboer . You do know if you click the post, you'll see the list of posts. Of course Since you're a troll, you know this.

@TR_forester6291 So I’m a troll now? What’s with the insult? Never mind. Goodbye.
