@Jsabinas cyber attacks, or so it seems
@jedijester I mean, Sierra Leone? How are they combatants?
@Jsabinas @jedijester
Reporter: "Why did you rob banks?"
Willie Sutton: "Because that's where the money is."
Hacking by terrorist organizations isn't new. That's a major source of their funding.
(And yes, I know that quote was actually just made up by the reporter.)
@jedijester and I'm merely speculating, but I welcome and respect your and anyone's opinion.
@jedijester It crosses my mind that if you hold anything precious in your IT systems, you'd better have hardened them by now or you deserve to lose your job. But what about those who can't afford it,? Did the Internet just close off another path to freedom of use? If you can't afford to play...too bad.
@Jsabinas @jedijester
This could be a test breach before they go after a bigger institution.
@voltronic @jedijester My last employer was a huge bank. In 2013 ish, our CIO mentioned that they had gone from one occasional attack to constant attempts. Sierra Leone had some vulnerability — lets hope other banks were paying attention.
It occurs that they may have Chinese interests. Think I’ll do some digging.
@voltronic Confirmed. Heavy investment by China. Interesting how the combatants may shake out in WWIII
@Jsabinas @jedijester
I'm old enough to remember when a firewall was a wall, because there was no internet. If you wanted to log in remotely, you dialed into the system to authenticate, then it dialed you back at your known landline phone number to let you access the computer.
We may end up back there, yet.
@AlphaCentauri @jedijester If I were to design a more secure system, I'd consider what abandoned tech I could leverage.
Is Gopher still alive?
@jedijester Now what did they do?
