Morning, CoSo!

So far so good for the reboot - got up bright and early, feeling great, got a lot done.

First of TWO posts today (plus one other one, for Humanist Book Club). This first post contains my charitable review of the crossover. LD isn't a series I enjoy, but there *is* a deeper lesson to be found in the very silly collision of LD characters with the SNW crew in "Those Old Scientists".

@MLClark I enjoyed this episode. Lower Decks makes me laugh. So did The Orville. But I recognize not everybody likes everything and that's just fine.

The reference that caught me was the Nausicaans, because it's a reference to the brilliant (as if it could be anything else) Hayao Miyazaki film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nausica%

@ianthealy

No, it's a reference to the Nausicaans of Trek, explicit from the dom-jot board. :)

The Miyazaki film is lovely, though!

@MLClark In-universe, yes of course. But the Miyazaki film is a decade older than the TNG episode where they appeared. They certainly referenced the name if nothing else. Anyway, I didn't remember the TNG episode because I have never rewatched the series since the original broadcasts.

@ianthealy

It's a common problem in SF that sometimes there are overlapping names used for entirely different species/places across series. It's a perfectly easy mistake to make, especially if one doesn't remember TNG.

"PLAY DOM-JOT HUMAN" happens to be scored into my head because "Tapestry" is one of my favourite TNG episodes. The Nausicaans of Trek and Miyazaki are verrrrrry different peoples, though! πŸ˜…
