for anyone interested in helping to save Buddhism from China's takeover,

here's an international nonprofit site that's translating texts and distributing them free.

China cannot possibly "take over" Buddhism, no more than Vatican City can "take over" Christianity.

Did you think China was somehow "in charge of" Buddhism? It's not.

@mcfate

no, i don't think so, but they're trying. claiming they have "found" Maitreya buddha and will install him when HH dies.

it's like what's happening with Christianity. so, the texts are being preserved from tampering, as tyrants are wont to do, as per deSantis and ilk.

@holon42

"They".

Do you understand that the Dalai Lama is a completely inconsequential figure to the majority of Buddhists?

Few Baptists and Methodists care who "they" replace the Pope or the Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church with, why would they?

No one who knows shit about Buddhism is going to be impressed by claims about "finding Maitreya".

Maitreya's not due for a few million years.

@holon42

Anyway, all China can do to Buddhism is to turn Chinese Buddhist sites into theme parks and tourist attractions, and they've already done that.

@mcfate

that's good. they're not the ones who concern me.

that is all.

@mcfate

the preservation of knowledge. over and out.

@holon42

China can't destroy the Buddhist Canon, either. There are copies literally EVERYWHERE.

@holon42

I'm sorry, you're completely mistaken about that.

There are complete collections of the entire Tibetan Buddhist Canon (and the Chinese Canon, and the Theravada Tripitika, and the Japanese Canon, and more) at several US universities, not to mention similar collections in other countries, and yes, they include the texts in that project.
