I was a little girl but I remember riding on my dad’s cotton sack & my mom & sisters were old enough to pick cotton.Heavy sacks were dragged with their hands cut by the razor sharp cotton balls even when they wore gloves to protect their hands. They picked very fast shredding the canvas gloves,then weighed & hauled up a long ladder & emptied into the trailer.The fields were picked clean, now cotton picking machines leave cotton on the plants. Childhood memories of The Big Valley of California.

how nasty. i didn't know cotton balls had sharp edges. is it a covering?

🤦🏻

@NOliver

i see, it's the dried calyx that's sharp. i knew picking cotton wasn't fun, but i thought it was the heat. this is torture.

@holon42
Yes, the heat as well 100 to 118 being the hottest I’ve seen it here. I live in Hanford about 35 miles from Fresno but the picking season is fall, October. It’s fruit basket of the world where I live. I’ve lived in Wyoming where the Temps were as low as -45 that was intolerable for me, I hate snow. I’ve also lived in Alabama, I love the country My daughter & family live in Eclectic, outside of Montgomery I visit often & it’s beautiful
