On June 6, I received final approval from HR for my move to Spain with my family for a year. I had been told for over a year that this shouldn't be a problem as we have remote employees all over, including Europe. Then on THURSDAY, my immediate boss says that there were concerns about my performance the past couple months and I hadn't been approved. Now the "miscommunication" is being investigated. I don't exactly want to be talking to labor attorneys for the first month of "vacation"...

@hallmarc To me this indicates you are someone your immediate boss doesn’t need to babysit so he’s going to ruin the experience all for his own welfare and benefit . I had an offer to go to Bermuda for a week to do a job within the company that I knew would take me three days. All on the expenses of the manager of the entire island. At that time I had a shitty boss too, and he kiboshed the entire plan.

@MidnightRider my boss has been extremely supportive but there have been some "run ins" with more senior people. None of this will cost the company an extra dime. I'm moving for a year for an adventure and just needed remote work approval.

@hallmarc Why is your immediate boss communicating there were concerns about your performance? When you have a fantastic developer of personnel, they stand up for you in situations like that. One time I had a boss so great that when upper management tried to pat his back for a project I completed. He said in front of the highest management, “ I was just along as a drag, midnight did all of this”. The truth was he paved the way, that’s an icon of management.

@MidnightRider apparently higher ups have had their eye on me for a while even though my boss has pushed back several times. It all depends on the power of the people above him.

@hallmarc That’s true and if they have a “woody” for you, that won’t end well. Start keeping copies of anything helpful to you and documenting your achievements on a thumb drive you take home.

@MidnightRider already done. Especially the email chain leading up to my approval.
