@John_Ripley when i posted this on fb, someone replied they had deducted their student loans. i checked his page & he's obviously someone that attended college in the early/mid 70s, which means a) college was a LOT cheaper, & b) personal loan interest, like a college loan, WAS still deductible (Credit card interest and other forms of personal interest were deductible on income taxes some years ago, but Congress eliminated those deductions in the Tax Reform Act of 1986.)

@redenigma @John_Ripley student loan interest actually is still deductible on qualified loans but it's capped at the lesser of $2,500 or the actual interest and is reduced gradually according to your MAGI. But deducting the student loan itself? Never heard of that!

@hallmarc @John_Ripley no deducting the loan itself was never a thing. lots of folks my age (i'm 69) have *extremely* selective memories (like they swear up & down that it's ALWAYS been mid-40s in December in NH... & it's less than 15 years ago when -10 in mid-Dec was usual)
