Anyone have a recommendation on a good nose balm for dogs? It's so dry it's bleeding occasionally. Using olive oil to soften it up for now.

It happened again last night. My dog's nose started bleeding from the left nostril.We were able to get it stopped with ice packs on the nose. Last week we took him to the vet for the same thing, but they had no idea what caused it. Any ideas?

So the Canadians 🍁 are jumping up and down recommending Bag Balm.😂 It has lanolin in it and is used to soften cow udders.

@Krysdammit @h8cloz YES! I need to have friends in the US ship it to me 😂

Really? Home Hardware has it stocked in their store in uptown Waterloo. They keep it on the cash counter. Ok, tiny store, it's their first one of the chain.

That is terrible. St. Jacobs is about 6 kilometers from where I live. Huge Mennonite farming community. They come into the city with their horses & buggies. Maybe that's why? Keep it in stock for them.

@FPonTheDL No. I'm sure they have it at our local Tractor Supply Co.

@h8cloz It's going to sound weird but you might need to check with a Vet first on this tip. Bees wax. Like from the hive wax, that stuff does wonders for skin care AND nose balm.

@PaganMother Took him in last Monday with a bloody nose. We didn't know where it was coming from (up inside or from outside). It was bad. He goes in again in a few days for blood tests. I finally saw the bleeding start on his nose, not from inside.

@h8cloz Oof, yeah likely dry. Make sure he's getting enough water to drink, and a bit of bee wax should help sooth the pain and aid him in healing since it's antibacterial.

@PaganMother Yeah, he drinks water constantly, which is another worry. Doing blood work next week to see if there are any underlying issues. Possibly Cushing's disease? He's a 9 year old Shepherd mix, so lots of possibilities.

@h8cloz Could be, I hope he turns out to be alright, maybe just a bit dehydrated, sometimes dogs do get that way with their nose if they don't have enough water.

@h8cloz
White Vaseline. Must be the white not the yellow. It has a very healing effect.

@h8cloz Dry air? Always gets worse here once the heat turns on.

@Lironah We haven't turned our heat on yet. Still in the 70s here. But you're right. I used to get nose bleeds this time of year. Never had a dog do it though. It's scary.

@h8cloz

Usually bleeding from one side would indicate that there is a foreign body up there. Could be something they inhaled, a sticker-who knows. But it can also indicate a local tumor. If it happens again then I would have the vet take a better, closer look. Has there been any medication change? Sometimes a bleed could be a side effect. I’m sorry your pup is going through that-how very confusing for them!

@whonat Prior to last Monday, he was on Carprofen, 1/2 pill per day for arthritis pain. That stopped, of course. Vet couldn't see anything obvious, but didn't want to do xrays until blood cleared up. They did blood work and nothing out of the ordinary (platelets were a bit low). Hoping we can make it to Thursday for his follow-up.
